Alice E. Till Advancement of Women in Pharmaceutical Sciences Recognition

ENTERPRISE LEVEL

PURPOSE:

The Alice E. Till Advancement of Women in Pharmaceutical Sciences Recognition celebrates and honors an AAPS member who has contributed significantly to the mentorship, advancement, and/or support of women in the pharmaceutical sciences. Nominees will be considered based on contributions to promote the professional development, success, and recognition of women in the pharmaceutical sciences. The ideal nominee will have made an impactful contribution through one or more avenues, including his/her institution, employer, or professional organization.

Number Presented Annually: 1

Presentation: PharmSci 360 Opening General Session or similar 

Award:

  • Reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000 to attend PharmSci 360 (Recipient must comply with AAPS’ travel policy for expenses to be eligible for reimbursement)
  • Complimentary, full conference registration to PharmSci 360
  • Invitation to the President’s Reception

Expectations for Recipient:

  • Attend the PharmSci 360 in-person to participate in presentation of recognition
  • Available to AAPS for interviews and other promotions
  • Willing to serve as an advisor within AAPS to women in the pharmaceutical sciences as appropriate

Nomination Type: Self, peer, or committee of peers

Qualifications for Nomination: 

  • Membership in AAPS at time of application and through PharmSci 360
  • Has been a member for the past three consecutive years
  • Never before received this recognition

Nomination Package:

  • A statement describing how the nominee has supported the advancement of women in pharmaceutical sciences and the impact. The nominee must demonstrate active support and advancement of women in the pharmaceutical sciences beyond the core profession or job responsibilities by promoting professional development and empowerment reflective of the diversity, scientific expertise, and leadership in AAPS.
  • At least 2, but no more than 3 letters of support.
    

Examples of activities that could be cited in the nomination statement include, but are not limited to:

  • Personal commitment and/or leadership in increasing hiring, retention, advancement, and recognition of women in academia (students and/or faculty), industry, or government.
  • Development of programs to build a pipeline of women leaders.
    Leadership in sponsoring and/or developing professional training/development programs for women in the pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Creating or sponsoring programs that enable women to build professional networks to prepare them for leadership roles.
  • Championing programs that can be demonstrated to improve work force participation of women, such as daycare facilities, flexible work options, fitness programs, institutional training on unconscious bias, etc.
  • Creating an environment that empowers full participation and advancement of women in the pharmaceutical sciences, possibly through mentoring, sponsorship, financial support, and/or personal investment of time in job training.
  • Promoting increased philanthropic giving to establish scholarships for women in the pharmaceutical sciences.

Selection Committee:

  • AAPS Awards Committee Chair
  • Alice Till or a substitute member appointed by the Awards Committee Chair
  • Previous year’s recipient
  • 3 officers (chair, vice chair, past chair) from the AAPS Women in Pharmaceutical Science Community. If this community no longer exists, the AAPS Board will appoint alternate members.

Selection Process: 

The Selection Committee will consider the following:

  • Role and contribution to women in pharmaceutical sciences (meaningful promotion of professional development, success, and recognition of women in the pharmaceutical sciences)
  • Scope and scale of impact
  • Potential or evidence for a lasting impact
  • Uniqueness of story; emotional impact
  • Demonstrations of best attributes of AAPS members (selflessness, high standards, etc.)
  • Moral and ethical approach to the work

The selection committee will vote to select a recipient. If no qualified candidates meet the high level of service AAPS seeks for this recognition, then it will not be given in that year.
