Emerging Pharmacogenetics Practices and its Application

When:  Jan 24, 2018 from 12:30 to 14:00 (ET)
Pharmacogenetics is the branch of science that studies the variation in the different metabolic pathways that leads to the individual difference in the drug responses. This response can be therapeutic or can create an adverse reaction. Individual difference in metabolic response suggests the variation in either pharmacodynamics or polymorphism in drug transporters, receptors. Thus, it is important to understand patient’s genetic makeup because it is an important determinant of difference in metabolic response to drug action and elimination. The idea is to minimize the incidences of adverse reactions and increase the therapeutic efficacy and to achieve that; it is important to customize the drug that complements the patient’s genetic constitution. Thus, it is essential to understand the correlation of genetic polymorphism and its response to the drugs.

This webinar will talk about the genetic variations that are leading to the varied responses to the pharmaceutical product. For some therapeutic category, it is currently in practice to develop a customized drug regimen for the patients, to minimize the side effects. This webinar will talk about currently established practices for Pharmacogenetics along with its challenges and future goal.

Learning Objectives:
  • Review pharmacogenetics as it is current understanding.
  • Explore correlating genetic polymorphism and genetic constituent of patients.
  • Analyze PGX customized drug regimen for therapeutics.

After studies at Universities in Germany and abroad he obtained his Doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Reading, GB. Following postdoctoral residencies in the UK and France (Strasbourg) he was habilitated in pharmacology and toxicology and received the venia legend (“Privatdozent”) at Hannover Medical School in the year 2000. Two years later he was appointed as full professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Hannover Medical School. From 2002 onwards he has been the Director of the Institute of Pharmaco- and Toxicogenomics at Hannover Medical School.
