Sharing a potentially useful biomarker database. Published in Nucleic Acids Research, 2023, 1–15 (https://academic.oup.com/crawlprevention/governor?content=%2fnar%2fadvance-article%2fdoi%2f10.1093%2fnar%2fgkad862%2f7321069) (doi.org/10.1093/nar/gkad862), the article "TheMarker: a comprehensive database of therapeutic biomarkers" discusses the creation of a freely accessible and searchable data base (TheMarker: A Comprehensive Database of Therapeutic Biomarkers.)
The database includes therapeutic biomarkers from five of the BEST categories used in clinical development and clinical practice: 1) pharmacodynamic, 2) surrogate endpoint, 3) monitoring, 4) predictive and 5) safety. Feeling that there was not an existing database of therapeutic biomarkers that brought together the needed meta data, the authors researched and then compiled their database. In addition to the biomarker name and class, the gene name that encodes for the protein is presented, synonyms, protein sequence, function, links to Gene, UniProt and HGNC are provided. Each biomarker is also tagged for one or more of the 5 BEST biomarker categories that describe how the biomarker is used with more details on the particular application of the biomarker in a disease. Where available, tissue specific RNA and/or biomarker presence in tissue are presented. Sources are referenced. It is also possible to search for a drug and obtain info on the disease use and related biomarkers. If you are looking for biomarkers for a disease, you can search by disease to obtain a listing of the disease and representative biomarkers.
I've found a few oddities (e.g., results for diabetes came back with both Type I and II and pancreatic cancer, but also lung, gastric and other cancers which when viewed demonstrated no relevance to diabetes) but so far looks to be a interesting source of information.
