  • Excipient Community Monthly Scientific Open Discussion: AI-Enabled Efficiency in Oral Dosage Form De

    Dear all,

    image

Prof. Allen Christine from University of Toronto (also a CEO and Co-founder of Intrepid Labs Inc.) will give a webinar "AI-Enabled Efficiency in Oral Dosage Form Development".
Abstract: Formulation design for oral dosage forms is still dominated by empirical search over narrow design spaces, which too often yields “the best of what we tried” rather than what is truly optimal. We present an AI-enabled workflow that shifts the objective toward “the best of what is possible.” Instead of relying on heterogeneous literature, whose limited scope and inconsistent measurements constrain model fidelity, we use AI to structure relevant data, learn performance-driving relationships, and guide exploration of broader, more meaningful design spaces. These AI-driven workflows surface higher-performing formulations earlier, focus experimental effort where it matters, reduce API and material use, and provide transparent decision support for CMC teams.
Don’t miss one of the final two Excipient Community Monthly Scientific Open Discussion seminars before AAPS transitions to its new community structure. This is a unique opportunity to connect with long-time colleagues and fellow excipient enthusiasts. Let’s celebrate our shared passion and exchange ideas one more time—see you there!

  • Important update about AAPS communities - PLEASE READ

    Hello BPABC Community,

I hope everyone is doing well.

This is an important update regarding restructuring of AAPS Communities. Briefly, there is a large number of Communities (34) currently in existence, which have a fair amount of overlap among them in terms of scope. In the interest of streamlining Communities' structure, and after comprehensive consultations and reviews, AAPS will be reducing this number to 8 core Communities, as shown in the snapshot below.

The BPABC Community will be rolled under the new “Quality” Community and existing members will automatically migrate to the new structure. You're welcome to join more than one Community. The new Communities will become effective in March 2026. Regarding Community leadership, AAPS will call for volunteers to apply for Chair and Vice Chair roles as well as other positions.

    Warm regards,

    Mayank Patel

    BPABC Community Chair

  • Open Scientific Discussion Next Month!

Please join us for an Open Scientific Discussion (OSD) hosted by the AAPS Gene and Cell Therapy Products (GCTPs) Community on October 14, 2025, 12 pm – 1 pm EDT on the following topic:

Low Blood Volume Alternatives for Immune Monitoring in Clinical Trials
Low-volume blood collection methods are transforming immune monitoring by reducing patient burden and enabling more frequent, longitudinal sampling.
Join our excellent panel of speakers/discussion leaders to engage on the following topics:
    • Shivshankar Balasubramaniam (ImmunitasBio): Low Blood Volume Alternative for Monitoring COVID-Specific T-Cell Immunity
    • Kirk Hofman ( SUNY Buffalo):  An Accessible Truculture based Whole-Blood Assay for CAR-T Recall Response: Simplified Workflow with Multiplexed Immunological Readouts
    • Yanshan Dai (Avantia Labs): RT-ddPCR-based Cellular Immunity Assessment

The Whole-Blood CAR-T Recall Assay offers a simplified workflow with multiplexed readouts for real-time CAR-T monitoring, while the Low-Volume COVID T-Cell Test tracks protective immunity from just a minimal blood draw, ensuring reliable and accessible insights. Complementing these approaches, the RT-ddPCR Immunity Platform delivers transcript-level precision with ultra-sensitive and reproducible detection of immune activation. Together, these innovations make immune monitoring in clinical trials more practical, scalable, and patient-friendly.

  • Implications of Excipient Phase Behavior on Protein Stability

The phase behavior of excipients in multicomponent pharmaceutical systems during freeze-drying involves a complex interaction between formulation components and processing conditions. Successful drug product and process development depends on thoroughly characterizing the phase transitions of excipients in both the frozen and drying stages, understanding their tendency to crystallize during processing, and identifying the physicochemical stability needs and critical quality attributes of the final product.

Raj Suryanarayanan, Ph.D., of the University of Minnesota, explains how excipient phase behavior influences the stability of the API, the intricate relationship between formulation composition and processing conditions, and the strengths and limitations of analytical techniques used to monitor phase transitions in frozen and freeze-dried systems.

  • Recognize Peer Review Week with AAPS

AAPS joins STEM organizations from across the breadth of the sciences in recognizing Peer Review Week, September 15-19, 2025. This week-long celebration highlights the value of peer review in ensuring credibility in research and this year's theme is "Rethinking Peer Review in the AI Era."

In recognition of Peer Review Week, AAPS will open the eLearning webinars, “” and “” to non-members for a limited time, along with the opening plenary from the 2025 PharmSci 360. This session featured a (starts at 48:00) with Ivan Oransky, M.D., Co-founder of and Colby Vorland, Ph.D., Assistant Research Scientist at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington.
